Trace elements are essential nutrients for animal nutrition and health. Traditionally, trace minerals in animal feeds exist in the inorganic forms. However, these sources are poorly absorbed by animals. High supplementation levels are practiced by feed manufacturers in order to increase safety margins between physiological requirements and dietary levels. This may result in an imbalance among nutrients. This also creates high levels of mineral excretion, with environmental pollution in intensive animal producing areas now becoming a serious problem.
