Achieving efficient and profitable production, especially with the increasing global threat of antimicrobial resistance, is critical for producers. Helping aquaculture species to better perform with infectious and physiological pressures is therefore of high interest and a focus of research.<\/p>\n<p>Cardozo <em>et al.,<\/em> 2018 compared <em>in vitro<\/em> bacterial aggregation capacity of inactivated <em>Pichia guilliermondii <\/em>(<em>Pg<\/em>) and <em>Saccharomyces cerevisiae <\/em>(<em>Sc<\/em>), with Mannose as the positive control. <em>Pg <\/em>demonstrated twice the aggregation capacity at all commercial \u00a0dosages compared to that of\u00a0 <em>Saccharomyces cerevisiae<\/em>. Pathogen aggregation is critical in innate immunity and homeostasis.<\/p>\n<p>To assess the bacterial aggregation capacity of <em>Pg in vivo<\/em>, a bacterial clearance study was performed: <em>Litopenaeus vannamei <\/em>shrimp were injected with<em> Vibrio harveyi. <\/em>\u00a0Three hours post-injection, <em>V. harveyi<\/em> concentration in hemolymph in the <em>Pg<\/em> fed shrimp was more than 3 times lower compared to control-fed shrimp. It was also shown that the granular hemocyte concentration in hemolymph was 56% higher after 4 weeks in <em>Pg<\/em> fed shrimp compared to that in control shrimp. Granular hemocytes are key for an effective and rapid immune response in shrimp, and represent an ideal parameter in monitoring shrimp immune potency.<\/p>\n<p>In order to confirm the potential benefit of <em>Pg<\/em> in shrimp culture conditions, 2 challenge studies were performed in \u00a0<em>L. vannamei<\/em> shrimp supplemented with 0.1% <em>Pg<\/em><em>: <\/em><strong>Survival of shrimp 5 weeks after White Spot Syndrome Virus challenge increased by 84% compared to unsupplemented control shrimp, whereas it was 76% higher 5 weeks after <em>Vibrio parahaemolyticus<\/em> challenge<\/strong>. In field conditions without specific pathogenic challenge, <em>vannamei<\/em> shrimp fed with 0.1% <em>Pg<\/em> showed <strong>significant 10% increased growth compared to control<\/strong> at the end of a 7 week trial.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Inactivated whole yeast <em>Pichia guilliermondii<\/em> feed supplementation offers unique traits for use in shrimp culture and daily management, improving growth while significantly helping the shrimp to better cope with physiological and disease stress.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"flex_column av_one_half  flex_column_div first  avia-builder-el-0  el_before_av_one_half  avia-builder-el-first  \" ><p> <strong>About the presenter\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dr.\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois J\u00e9gou<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0\u00a0<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12730182 BCX9\">Aquaculture Health and Performance, ADM Animal Nutrition<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Fran\u00e7ois J\u00e9gou\u00a0<i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was born in and spent his childhood in Japan.
