If their use as a supplement in feed has been a defining characteristic of modern livestock farming, antibiotic growth promoters were introduced during the industrialisation of livestock farming, especially in poultry feed during the 1940s. In addition to the imprecise mechanisms of growth promotion triggered by antimicrobial agents, the use of AGPs is now very controversial.
